DERMS Operations Specialist - DERMS / DER Operations

The DERMS Operations Specialist plays a crucial role in the development and implementation of the Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS). This newly created position offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation, laying the groundwork for the expansion of energy management within the distribution system. The DERMS Operations Specialist is responsible for the real-time and near-real-time operational integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) on the electric distribution system. This role ensures DERs are operated safely, reliably, and in compliance with grid constraints, using DERMS and related advanced distribution applications. The specialist serves as a technical bridge between distribution system operators, planning, IT/OT systems, and DER programs.

Currently, DERMS is in Phase I of implementation, focusing on visibility of the distribution system. During this stage, the DERMS Operations Specialist will maintain system awareness, monitor distributed resources, and evaluate load and generation forecasts. As the program prepares for Phase II, which includes system optimization and dispatch, the DERMS Operations Specialist will contribute to the development of user interfaces, tools, and processes necessary for seamless and reliable DERMS operations. As new distributed resources are integrated, the specialist will ensure communication paths are established for real-time monitoring and dispatch.

This role will initially follow a hybrid work schedule, with four days per week, Monday through Thursday, at the office located at 241 Ralph McGill.

• Serve as the DERMS Operations Specialist, maintaining visibility and optimization of the distribution system through dispatching DER resources and evaluating plans based on generation and load forecasts while interfacing with Bulk Power, Fleet, and other stakeholders. (35%)
• Provide subject matter expertise on utility electric grid switching and operations to help develop the implementation of the DERMS operations team role in a vertically-integrated utility and provide training on these tools and processes. (25%)
• Test and troubleshoot DERMS results for Forecasting, Optimization, and aggregated monitoring and controls by validating model inputs, topology, telemetry, DER attributes, constraints, and business-rule assumptions. (15%)
• Create model test cases, user acceptance test scripts, regression checks, issue logs, and defect documentation for vendor and internal team resolution. (15%)
• Provide recommendations for interface improvements and operational reporting while facilitating the development of relevant tools, processes, and new resource interconnections. (5%)
• Support integration between DERMS, ADMS, GIS, SCADA, AMI, CIS, DER registration/interconnection systems, customer program systems, and vendor applications. (5%)
• Participate in storm restoration support, application support rotation as needed, and post-event model or application troubleshooting. (5%)

Experience and Education

• A minimum of 5 years of experience in power delivery is required.
• Distribution or Transmission Control Center experience is strongly preferred.
• A bachelor's degree or relevant work experience is preferred.
• Experience in renewables, storage, and/or analytics is a plus.
• Experience in data validation and alarm management is a plus.

• Knowledge of distribution and/or bulk electric system operations.
• Proven problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex issues and prioritize work effectively with minimal supervision.

• Ability to learn interconnection policies, program guidelines, and generator requirements to effectively implement and manage the operation of distributed generating resources.
